Assessment

The Maldives are rated as a Role Model, because of a declared intention to become climate-neutral by 2020. The Maldives intend to apply for funding but state that their pledge is voluntary unconditional to external support.

 

Description

The Maldives have pledged to become climate-neutral by 2020. The target was proposed in September 2009 and submitted to the Copenhagen Accord on 29 January 2010. A detailed plan on how to achieve this goal has yet to be published.

Assumptions

The Maldives have provided a national greenhouse gas inventory for 1994 only and there were no emission projections. We used the growth rates from CDIAC (2008) to cover the periods from 1990 to 1994 and 1994 to 2006  Projections are based on the growth rate published in the IEA World Energy Outlook (2009)
