Virtual Event – Pulling the plug on fossils in power

Virtual Event

The Climate Action Tracker held a virtual event on 1.5°C aligned benchmarks for decarbonising the power sector on Tuesday, September 19 entitled: “Pulling the plug on fossil fuels in power”

At the event, we launched our report on 1.5°C aligned benchmarks for decarbonising the power sector and briefing on whether countries are pulling the plug on fossils.

We find the growth in installed renewable energy capacity is accelerating, but the power sector is a long way from the necessary decarbonisation, while plans to keep building new coal and gas power plants represent a critical threat to 1.5ºC.

Bill Hare started by taking stock of the current state of climate action. Neil Grant presented our 1.5°C aligned benchmarks for decarbonising the power sector which show how the shares of coal, fossil gas and renewables need to evolve out to 2050 globally and for a cross-section of countries. Hanna Fekete concluded by providing a snapshot of the progress of countries against our 1.5°C aligned power sector benchmarks. The event was moderated by Claire Fyson.

The recording of this event is available on our YouTube page, please view it in full screen so all the detail is visible. The slides from the presentation are here.
